Thurtey:
The layout is based on the number "30" and was built to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the "Wessex Narrow Gauge Modeller" formed in 1975.
It is 30 inches square and was designed to be running within 30 seconds of placing in position.
It was originally built on a budget of £30 (excluding stock) using items lying around or purchased off the "009 Society" Second Hand Stand but has now been enhanced with additional luxuries such as lighting and a hand-held controller.
It was supposed to be a short-lived bit of humour, particularly the track plan, but has now established itself as a layout for children (and adults) to play on. It also shows that you can have an interesting and very operational layout for little money and even less space.
So many layouts seem to be "do not touch". This is exactly the opposite and the public are positively encouraged to have a go. Who knows? It may be the start of a whole new hobby!
The layout is available for exhibitions.
